Detailed Solution

Champaran was the place where the Indigo planter’s movement occurred.
Champaran, a Bihar district, was where the Indigo planter’s movement occurred. It began in 1917. This was the first mass movement started by Mahatma Gandhi in India. This movement was initiated against the colonial government, which forcefully made the Indian peasants cultivate Indigo to be exported to Britain. They had to grow this Indigo without getting any payment. Champaran movement is regarded as the first Satyagraha movement started by Mahatma Gandhi after returning from South Africa. The British government paid poor prices and exploited the farmers leaving them in poverty.
The Champaran Satyagraha was held against the peasants doing begar and forcing them to produce Indigo by the colonial government.
