The time Volksgeist was made by the two words Volks meaning people and geist meaning their common will. The term was used by Justus Moser and by Johann Gottfried Herder. The latter was known as the father of cultural nationalism and always gave importance to the concept of a nation as an organic group distinctive in language and culture. He was a romantic thinker of the 18 century who instilled the idea of nationalism in Germany.
