Detailed Solution

Khilafat movement was to exert pressure on the British government so that it would continue to recognise the Ottoman Sultan as the Khalifa of Islam. Turkey and the British both contributed to the fall of the Ottoman Empire during the First World War. All authority was taken away from the Turkish sultan. Muslims venerated the Khalifa as their spiritual leader. It was believed that Muslim sentiment would change if the caliph's reputation declined. As a result, the Khilafat movement was started by the Muslim population in India. The Khilafat movement was created in the years following World War I by Indian Muslims and Indian nationalism (1919-1924). Its objective was to exert pressure on the British government to maintain its recognition of the Ottoman Sultan as the Khalifa of Islam even after the war was done and the Ottoman Empire had fallen.
