A transmitter and receiver are fitted to the lower end of the boat. The transmitter sends out ultrasonic waves reflected by the bottom of the sea, and the receiver detects them. The distance travelled can be known by measuring the time the wave travels the up and down path. Hence Ultrasonic waves are used for measuring the depth of the sea.
