They have traditionally been connected to small-scale handicrafts, leatherwork, and tanning. A significant untouchable caste in modern-day Andhra Pradesh was the Madiga. They were adept at tannery work, sandal making, and cleaning hides. Because they handle dead animals, which are viewed as filthy and polluting, leatherworkers have historically been detested. However, there was a large need for shoes for the military during the First World War. Only the traditional leather artisans and shoemakers were willing to provide army shoes due to caste prejudice against leather labour. So that they could demand exorbitant prices and make significant profits.
