The Rashtrakutas were initially subordinate to the Chalukyas in the Deccan. In the seventh century, rulers recognised big landowners as their samantas, or servants. The samantas were expected to bring their rulers gifts and to aid in military operations. They finally became wealthy and powerful. They claimed to be the great lords of a circle or region (maha-samantas), among other titles. One of them, the Rashtrakutas, began as the Chalukyas' deputies in the Deccan. In the middle of the ninth century, a Rashtrakuta leader named Dantidurga deposed the Chalukya overlord by performing a rite known as hiranya-garbha. Even though he was not born a Kshatriya, he was reincarnated as one after the operation was completed.
