Before the introduction of the printing machine and block printing, they composed manuscripts by hand. A scribe was a person who made copies of texts before the development of automated printing. Scribes were people who could write, helped in meal preparation, and possibly wrote on other materials that have since vanished. With the invention of the printing press, the scribe's vocation lost its importance and prominence. Previously, the profession of a scribe was widespread among cultures. Historians had to rely totally on the copies of the manuscripts prepared by the scribes. Because there was no printing press in ancient times, scribes had to copy manuscripts by hand.
