Detailed Solution

Kulaks were wealthy farmers in Soviet Russia.
Kulak was a Russian peasant well off enough to run a farm and employ workers. After Lenin's death, Stalin took over as party leader and implemented strict emergency measures. He thought that wealthy peasants and rural traders were hoarding goods in anticipation of rising prices. As a result, supplies had to be seized, and speculation had to halt. Party members patrolled the grain-producing regions in 1928, directing forced grain collecting and conducting 'kulak' raids. As the shortages persisted, the decision to collectivise farms was made because it was claimed that the small size of holdings contributed to the grain shortages.
