In 1687 Sir Isaac Newton explained that ocean tides result from the sun's and moon's gravitational attraction on the earth's oceans. When the highest point in the wave (crest) reaches a coast, the coast experiences a high tide. The gravitational attraction between the moon and the earth is what causes tides. Only because of this process will the water levels in the oceans and seas rise or fall. So tides are caused by gravitational force.
