In 1687 Sir Isaac Newton explained that ocean tides result from the sun's and moon's gravitational attraction on the earth's oceans. When the highest point in the wave (crest) reaches a coast, the coast experiences a high tide. The gravitational attraction between the moon and the earth is what causes tides.
