If the sum of all the forces acting on a system or a body is non-zero, the forces are said to be unbalanced.
A force is defined as a push or a pull, which either causes or ceases motion in an object. It is also responsible for changing the direction of motion of a moving body. Balanced forces may alter the shape/ size of an object but unbalanced forces are responsible for changing the state of motion of an object. Unbalanced forces also impart impulse to objects and are responsible for providing acceleration. For example, a bicycle slows down if the rider stops pedalling. This is due to the fact that when the rider stops pedalling, friction force causes the bicycle to stop. So, in order to keep the bicycle moving, the rider must exert a force enough to counter the opposing friction and also provide acceleration.
