Detailed Solution

18th century France witnessed the emergence of social groups termed the middle class, who had become prosperous and had access to education and new ideas. With modernisation, economic growth and increased foreign trade, a new class started emerging within the Third Estate, the middle class, from the 18th century. Manufacturing goods like woollen and silk textiles for export or the affluent society members and participating and partaking in expanding overseas trade was the source of their wealth. Professions such as lawyers, doctors, and administrative officials were also included under the category of the middle class. Education and access to revolutionary ideas like a society based on freedom and equal laws and opportunities for all made them question the division of the society into estates, where the first two estates enjoyed an elevated status and various privileges. The middle class believed merit and not birth should determine a person's social position.
