18th century India witnessed the decline of Surat as a port town.
India was connected to the Red Sea and the Gulf through Surat on the Gujarat coast. This network of export trade was supported by a wide range of Indian bankers and merchants, who also transported commodities and provided production financing. But by the 1750s, the Indian traders who had been in charge of the aforementioned trade had started to disintegrate since the European companies increasingly grew in power. These elements caused Surat port and Hooghly port, which were formerly run by local businessmen, to collapse.
