Wave is defined as the disturbance created in a medium. Wave motion is the disturbance caused in a medium by transferring energy but not mass. When an energy disturbance occurs in a medium, the medium's particles vibrate around their mean position, pass the disturbance to the following particle, and then return to their mean position. There is no net displacement of the medium particles as this process continues, only a temporary change in position for the medium particles as they approach in the forward direction at a constant velocity. In this manner, energy is transferred consistently while a wave moves through a medium.
