Prussia established the Zollverein, a customs union, in 1834, which was quickly followed by the majority of German states. Its main aim was to economically bring the Germans together into a nation. The customs union abolished the tariff barriers. Also, the number of currencies was reduced from over 30 to only 2. Zollverein was founded during the German confederation under the leadership of Prussia. Germany became a mostly free trade zone because of the establishment of the Zollverein, which was formed to manage tariffs and economies within their territories. The construction of Zollverein was regarded as the first step toward German unification.
