Napoleon made several changes to the administrative system, known as the Civil Code of 1804, to make it more efficient in the territories he ruled: Administrative divisions in occupied territories were simplified. The feudal system was abolished, and peasants were liberated from serfdom and manorial dues. In towns, guild restrictions were lifted, and all birth-based privileges were revoked. Equality before the law was established, as was the property right. Transportation and communication systems were upgraded. The adoption of uniform law, standardised weights and measures, and a common national currency significantly aided the growth of trade and traders. All were subject to uniform laws.
