Godavari river, also known as Burhi Ganga or Dakshini Ganga, drains an area of about 313,000 square kilometres. Trimbakeshwar in the Nasik district of Maharashtra is its source. Through stony terrain in Kneiss and Gondwana, it travels 1465 kilometres. The Ajanta range of hills in the Maharashtra district of Aurangabad is the source of the Purna River, a tributary of the Godavari. Although, it originates in the Balaghat Range of Hills close to Ahmednagar. The Manjira is a tributary of the Godavari with a 34 per cent share of the drainage basin. Pranhita is the Godavari's main tributary.
