Detailed Solution

Bengal Gazette was a weekly magazine edited by James Augustus Hickey.
On January 29, 1780, the first printed newspaper in India and Asia, 'Hicky's Bengal Gazette', also known as ‘The Original Calcutta General Advertiser’, began publication on January 29, 1780. Hickey was the paper's author, editor, and publisher. Published in Calcutta, the capital of colonial India at the time, the newspaper initially took a neutral stance on subjects. However, Hickey later reversed his position and began mocking the Company and its officials. His article was widely read by colonial officials in Calcutta, who disapproved of his writings. He accused the East India Company of ineptitude and corruption. Hickey also went against Governor-General Warren Hastings, accusing him of mismanagement.
