The French Revolution was the first expression of nationalism in Europe. The French monarchy's authority was transferred to a group of French citizens due to the political and constitutional reforms that followed the French Revolution. A feeling of belonging to a group through La Patrie and Le Citoyen (the citizen) developed. The National Assembly was established. Oaths were taken, and hymns were composed. Laws that were centralised and uniform were established. A consistent system of weights and measures was introduced, and internal customs charges were eliminated. The official language of the country is now French. The French military started taking nationalism abroad after the Revolutionary Wars.
