A 27-year-old Laxmi Lakra was Northern Railways' first female engine driver. In Indian families, women are not encouraged to go for higher education, especially to train as engineers and doctors. Once they complete school, women are encouraged to marry and settle down. There was a distinction in this situation. She was born into a poor tribal family. But Laxmi Lakra was adamant about her studies. She worked hard at school while helping out her family at home. She also did odd jobs during her schooling to provide for her family. Her driving force was her determination to disprove those who tried to prevent her from doing things simply because she was a girl. So Laxmi Lakra took a diploma in electronics. In her first attempt, she passed the railway board exams and became the first woman engineer on Northern Railways.
