Detailed Solution

3500 trees were cut annually for the sleeper of Madras Presidency alone. Every mile of the rail route track required the utilization of somewhere in the range of 1760 and 2000 sleepers. The railroad network developed quickly during the 1860s. By 1890, around 25,500 kilometres of track had been built. The track's length had grown to about 765000 kilometres by 1946. As railway tracks stretched across India, many trees were cut. As early as the 1850s, 35,000 trees were chopped down each year in Madras Presidency alone for sleepers. The government awarded individuals contracts to deliver the requisite amounts. These contractors began chopping down trees at random. As a result, forests surrounding railway lines began to vanish at a fast pace.
