The pointed needle of the compass indicates the North direction when it is free to rotate.
A magnet, when freely suspended, orients itself in the north-south direction. In a compass, the north pole of the magnetic needle is kept pointed and sharp to know the direction. Therefore, it always indicates the North direction. It happens because our earth behaves like a magnet, and the south pole of the earth’s magnet is situated in the geographic north. So, a suspended magnet’s north pole is attracted to the south pole of the earth’s magnet, and hence it points towards the geographic north direction.
