Light reflected from rough and smooth surfaces is diffused and irregular, respectively.
When the light gets reflected from a rough surface, it reflects irregularly in many directions based on its roughness, a phenomenon called diffusion of light. When light reflects from a smooth surface, it reflects in only one direction, called regular reflection. In other words, the reflection of light from a polished surface is called "regular reflection," and the reflection of light from a rough surface is called "irregular reflection."
