We know that area is the amount of space occupied by a two-dimensional figure. In other words, it is the quantity that measures the number of unit squares that cover the surface of a closed figure. The unit of area is measured in squared units. 

For example:

If we need to find the area of a square whose side is 5cm,

We know that the Area of the square = ${\left(\mathrm{side}\right)}^2$

By substituting the values we get:

Area = ${(5 \mathrm{cm})}^2$

Area = $5 \mathrm{cm}\times 5 \mathrm{cm}$

Therefore the area is 25 cm².

Thus we can say that the area is always measured in squared units.
