Concept: Tree-shrew-sized proto-mammals, which emerged in the shadow of dinosaurs approximately 200 million years ago, are the oldest evolutionary ancestors of primates.

Our (then scarcely larger than rat-sized) mammalian ancestors didn't start progressively evolving into primates until after their extinction 65 million years ago.

Any of the 17 Southeast Asian species of tiny mammals that resemble squirrels and "real" shrews belong to the order Scandentia.

Tree shrews, however, are neither rodents nor insectivores and differ from them to the extent that they comprise their own mammalian group.
