A platen is a board pressed against the back of the paper in letterpress printing to create the type's impression. It was initially a wooden board, but it was later built of steel.
The long handle on the Gutenberg Printing Press was hooked to the screw. This handle was used to press down the platen over the printing block, which was positioned on top of a sheet of wet paper while turning the screw.
