Detailed Solution

A convex lens always gives a virtual, erect and magnified image when the object is placed at a distance less than the F from the pole of the lens. (F is the focal length).
A magnifying glass is a convex lens. We know that a convex lens is also called a converging lens and all the converging of the incident rays happens at F (Principal focus). When a convex lens is held closer to the object(<F), the object distance(u)  becomes minimal, and the image formed is virtual, erect, and magnified. The object here lies between F and C. Therefore, the smaller the object's distance, the greater the magnifying power.
