Detailed Solution

Let the mass of ice and stone be mice  and mstone  respectively. When both float together in water, then volume of water displaced is

Vinitial=mice+mstoneρw

                        {Vinitialρwg=(mice+mstone)g}

Where ρw  is the density of water.

Finally, when the ice melts, then the mass mice  gets converted to water of volume

V1=miceρw

Further, the stone sinks to the bottom as a result of which a volume V2  of water is displaced by it.

So,

V2=mstoneρstone

So, total final volume displaced is

Vfinal=miceρw+mstoneρstone

Since ρstone>ρw , so

Vfinal<Vinitial

i.e. volume of water displaced when the ice melts and stone sinks is less than the volume displaced. Hence the level of water will fall.
