Q.

A 1.0g sample of Fe2O3 solid of 55.2 percent purity is dissolved in acid and reduced by heating the solution with zinc dust (oxidation state of iron changes from +3 to +2). The resultant solution is cooled and made upto 100ml. An aliquot of 25ml of this solution requires 17.0ml of 0.0167M solution of an oxidant for titration. Calculate the no. of electrons takes up by oxidant in the reaction of above titration

Detailed Solution

Weight of Fe2O3 in 25ml solution =  1×55.2×25100×100=0.138g
Milliequivalents of  Fe2O3= Milliequivalents of Fe2+= Milliequivalent of oxidant
 0.138×2160×1000=17×0.0167×n
n = 6
So electrons are taken up by the oxidant in the titration
