Detailed Solution

A manual scavenger is a person who is involved in the practice of removing and disposing of human/animal excreta with the help of brooms, cans etc. In India, manual scavenging has been going on for years. In ancient times, Dalits were forced to do the work of cleaning. After Independence, even though such positions were open for all people, they were filled overwhelmingly by Dalits as upper caste people considered themselves too superior to do the work. The practice of manual scavenging is hazardous and can cause serious health issues, leading to the death of a manual scavenger. A law prohibiting the employment of manual scavengers has been passed since 1993, but the practice still exists on a large scale, with a considerable number of people losing their lives.
