Detailed Solution

The net accelerating force is 35000 N and acceleration of the train is 1.94m/s2
Given:
Force applied by the engine = 40,000 N
Friction force in the direction opposite to the motion = 5,000 N
The net force, = 40,000 N - 5,000 N
       = 35,000 N
Mass of the train,      = 5 × 2,000 kg + 8,000 kg             = 18000 kg
From Newton's second law of motion, acceleration,
= Fm  35000 N18000 kg 1.94 m/s2
Acceleration of the train is 1.94 m/s2
