Alcohols react with hydrogen halides to form alkyl halides. General reaction of R-OH with HX:

ROH + HX → R–X + H2O

In the above reaction if HX is HCl and dissolved in R-OH, in the presence of ZnCl2; then the reagent called is Lucas reagent. This reaction displaces -OH (poor leaving group) with -Cl group. This reaction used to test between primary, secondary and tertiary alcohols and this test called Lucas test.
