A band of different colours emerges out of a glass prism when a white light incident on it. This is phenomenon is called as dispersion of white light by a glass prism.
The phenomenon of ‘Dispersion of light’ is discovered by Newton. When a white light incident on a glass prism, it emerges out as a band of different colours. This splitting of white light into its constituent colours is called as “Dispersion of light”. Dispersion of light takes place because the white light consists of different colours. Each colour has different speed in same medium such as glass or air. Each colour makes a different angle of refraction with the refracting surface of prism because the path of light changes when it travels from one medium to another. Therefore, we see a band of different colours emerging out of a glass prism as shown in figure1.
