Detailed Solution

Given mQ=pmP and vQ=vp/q.From the principle
of conservation of momentum, we have (since body
P comes to rest after collision)

mPvP+mQvQ=mQv

where v is the velocity of body Q after collision.
Thus

mPvP+pmP×vPq=pmPv.

which gives            vvP=p+qpq                       (i)

Now, the coefficient of restitution is given· by

e=vvP-vQ=vvP-vPq

which gives             vvP=eqq-1                   (ii)

Equating (i) and (ii), we get  e=p+qpq-1
