A bonded contract labourer employed for a fixed time is known as an indentured labourer. Thousands of Indian and Chinese labourers worked on plantations, in mines, and on international road and railroad construction projects during the nineteenth century. Indentured labourers in India were engaged under contracts that guaranteed them a trip home once they had completed five years of service on their employer's plantation. The majority of Indian indentured labourers originated in what are now eastern Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, central India, and the arid parts of Tamil Nadu. These areas underwent numerous changes in the middle of the nineteenth century, including a decline in cottage industries, an increase in land rents, and the clearing of land for mines and plantations. All of this impacted the poor; they could not pay their rent, accrued significant debt, and were compelled to leave their homes in search of employment.
