It was employed in British colonies in the West Indies, Africa, and Southeast Asia to complete train construction projects and work on sugar, cotton, and tea plantations. Following the abolition of slavery, newly freed men and women rejected the meagre wages provided to labour on the sugar estates in British colonies in the West Indies. A system of bonded labour known as indentured labour was formed after slavery was abolished.
