Let ucms1 be the speed of the bullet. Since the mass of the bullet remains unchanged, its speed becomes υ=3u4cms1 after it penetrates a distance x = 3.5 cm. The retardation a due to the resistance of the wooden is given be u2υ2=2ax or u2(3u4)2=2a×3.5

Which gives a=u216cms2. The bullet will come to rest when its velocity υ'=0. If x' is the thickness penetrated by the bullet, then u2υ'2=2ax' or x'=u22a but a=u216cms2.
