Detailed Solution

Given, the initial momentum of system pi=0

Momentum = Mass x Velocity

m1=mgun=8kg ,

m2=mbullet=0.02 kg

v2=vbullet=100 m/s

by applying, the conservation of momentum, the momentum of a system is constant if there is no external force on the system.

m1v1+m2v2=0

8v+0.02×100=0

v=-0.25 m/s

Therefore, the recoil velocity of the gun will be -0.25m/s. The negative direction signifies that the direction of the gun will be opposite to the direction of the bullet.
