A car is moving along a straight line. It moves from 0 to P in

18 s

and returns from P to Q in

6 s

. Its average velocity is

10 m / s

and average speed is

20 m / s

in going from (a) O to P and (b) O to P and back to Q.

Given,
(a) The displacement between O and P

= 360 m

The path travelled from O to P

= 360 m

So, Average Velocity,

\frac{360}{18} = 20 m / s

And, Average Speed,

\frac{360}{18} = 20 m / s

(b) The displacement between O and Q

= 240 m

The path travelled from O to P and back to Q,

360 + 120 = 480 m

Total time taken to travel from O to O and back to Q,

18 + 6 = 24 s

So, Average Velocity,

\frac{240}{24} = 10 m / s

And, Average Speed,

\frac{480}{24} = 20 m / s
