Given, a carpet having the inner part of the carpet as blue and size as 5 m × 2 m, has a 25 cm wide red border.
We know that the area of a rectangle is given as the product of its length and breadth.
Now, assuming the areas of the red portion as

A 1

and that of the blue portion as

A 2

.
We have their areas as follows,

A 1 = (5 × 2) − 6.75 = 3.25

A 2 = 5 − 0.5 × 2 − 0.5 = 4.5 × 1.5 = 6.75 m 2

Now,

A 1 A 2 = 3.25 6.75 = 1327 = 13 : 27

So, the ratio of the areas of the red and blue sections on the carpet is obtained as 13:27.
