A children's Press was set up in France in 1857. Significant leaps in mass literacy occurred in Europe during the nineteenth century, bringing in large numbers of new readers among children, women, and workers. Children became an important part of the reading population. The decree which made primary education compulsory for children further led to the increasing number of books published for children. These books were published for both educational and entertainment purposes. The scope of this increased focus on Children's textbooks is the establishment of a publication press in France in 1857 solely for children. Germany was not too far behind, as we saw the emergence of The Grimm Brothers, who spent years gathering traditional folk stories from peasants and compiling them into a book.
