The water column within xylem vessel is not broken due to its weight at normal transpiration rates and at normal temperature because water has high tensile strength due to its high cohesive force.
(1) Lignification of inner walls of xylem vessels helps in adhesion of water to wall surface of vessel to avoid detachment of water column from vessel surface under tension.
(2) Water column is not broken due to cohesive force of water and not due to root pressure. Root pressure is not developed during active transpiration.
(3) Very little amount of sugar is present in xylem sap, which has no role in preventing the breakage of water
column of xylem.
