It has the right to make decisions on behalf of society. This conventional view was subjected to growing criticism. Liberal democracies have increasingly included restrictions on what the parliamentary majority can do to protect citizens' fundamental rights. For example, in 1948, after Sri Lanka gained independence, the Sinhala leaders, despite being democratically elected, adopted majoritarian measures to establish Sinhala supremacy by passing an Act in 1956 that made Sinhala the country's official language and also created policies that favoured the Sinhalas in government jobs and university positions.
