Detailed Solution

The mass of copper block, m=5kg , Initial temperature of copper block, T1=500°C
Final temperature of copper block, when it is placed on the block, T2=0°C
Specific heat of copper, s=0.39×Jg1°C1=0.39×103JKg1°C1
 Heat given by the block, ΔQ=msΔT ,  ΔQ=5×0.39×103×5000=9.75×105J
Heat taken by ice to melt m kg of ice ,  Q2=mLf=m×335×103

Lf=335Jg1=335×103JKg1
Hence, according to principle of calorimetry, Q2=Q1

m×335×103=9.75×105m=9.75×105335×103=2.91kg
