Detailed Solution

A cyclist does not come to rest immediately after she/he stops pedalling due to the inertia of motion.
Inertia is the property of matter which resists change in motion. It is a property of matter by which it continues in its existing state of rest or uniform motion in a straight line, unless that state is changed by an external force. The first law of motion explains that a force is required to change the state of inertia of an object. Here, the force opposing the motion of the cycle is friction. But, the friction is not sufficient to bring the cycle to rest immediately. Therefore, it provides continuous retardation and brings the cycle to rest in sufficient time.
