Detailed Solution

Bengal Gazette was the first weekly paper published in India. However, The English East India Company began to import presses in the late seventeenth century. The English language press developed only in the late 18th century. The first weekly newspaper to appear in India was the Bengal Gazette, brought out by Gangadhar Bhattacharya. When James Augustus Hickey began to edit this, it was a private English enterprise, and he was proud of its independence from colonial influences. The paper published a lot of advertisements and gossip about the English colonial officials and the company’s senior officials in India. Governor Warren Hastings promoted the production of officially sanctioned newspapers to counter the flow of information that damaged the colonial government’s reputation.
