Detailed Solution

The first weekly paper was published in India was Bengal Gazette. Although The English East India Compay began to import presses in the late seventeenth century, the English language press developed only in the late 18th century. The first weekly newspaper to appear in India was the Bengal Gazette, brought out by Gangadhar Bhattacharya. James Augustus Hickey began to edit it and was proud of its independence from colonial influences. However, the paper published a lot of advertisements and gossip about the English colonial officials and the Company’s senior officials in India. Thus Governor Warren Hastings promoted the production of officially sanctioned newspapers to oppose the flow of information that damaged the colonial government’s reputation.
