A fly shuttle was a device used for faster weaving. It was invented by John Kay in 1733. This device moves using ropes and pulleys. It places the horizontal threads into the vertical threads for cloth making. The invention of this mechanical device made it possible for weavers to operate large looms and weave wide pieces of cloth. In previous looms, the shuttle was thrown or passed through the threads by hand and required two weavers side by side to pass the shuttle. This device increased production and reduced labour demand.
