A foot valve is a spring-loaded valve connected at the end of a pump suction line.
The foot valve of a lift pump opens in the upward direction.
“Pressure is the force acting on a unit area of any surface.” When the pump is functioning, pressure is created that sucks the water up through the pipe. For example, a foot valve is set at the end of a pipeline in a suction lift application. The foot valve opens as water flows upward because of the pressure from the inward water. The upward pressure becomes zero when the pump is shut off.
