Detailed Solution

A forest in which people were not allowed to stay on condition of free service was reserved forest. The reserved forests were the best forests under complete government control. They comprised the trees valuable to the colonial government such as Deodar and Sal. The entry of villagers was restricted into these forests and was not allowed to gather forest produce. However, few villagers were allowed to enter the reserved forest instead of services without any wage. These services included the cutting of trees, transporting timber, and protecting forests from fires. Thus, they were known as forest villages. Hence, free labor was demanded by the government and the villagers suffered at hands of the colonialist officials of the forest.
