Given,
Number of men present in garrison = 900.
Provision for number of days=42 days
Total number of men after arrival of 500 more men = 1400.
Number of day’s food last for 900 men

= 42

days. Let the number of days food last for 1400 men be x days.
Then,

Number of days	42	x
Number of men	900	1400

We can clearly observe that, more the number of men, less will be the number of days for which food lasts.
Therefore, this is the case of inverse proportion
As this is case of inverse proportion, therefore the product will remain constant throughout table that is,

42 × 900 = x × 1400

Solving the equation,

1400 x = 37800 x = 378001400 x = 27

Hence, food will last for 27 days if 500 more men arrive.
Therefore, option 3 is correct.
